The new codes involve updating equipment during a replacement, but not a repair. The new energy code is what requires owners to have a new system installed in the event the system can not be repaired. This code also requires that a manual J is calculated to determine the size of the unit. Don't let your HVAC contractor walk in and say "this house is 3000 square feet? You'll need to install (2) 3-ton units" unless he has already done a manual J and explained to you how it works. The code also requires the duct work be updated as well. The benefits are passed on to the homeowner with the new duct work. The code states, duct work is to be insulated to R-8. This insulation allows air to pass through ductowkr more efficiently.
In the event there is a client of yours needing to have repairs done, give me a call and I am happy to help them out and recommend the HVAC contractor I use repeatedly. Even for service and remodeling projects.
